2012 KAWASAKI KLR™650

The Best-Selling Dual-Sport Goes the Distance

Across sand, dirt, forests, and of course pavement, nothing else adapts like the KLR™650. Built for almost any terrain an adventurous rider could dream up, this dual-sport can go the distance with its rugged single-cylinder engine and incredible fuel efficiency. Effective wind protection and a 5.8-gallon fuel tank ensure incredible range between stops. Combine that with an aluminum rear cargo rack that accommodates saddlebags or a tailbag, and it’s a winning combination – so much so that the KLR has been the best-selling dual-sport seven years in a row.

A single-cylinder, 651cc four-stroke engine propels this world traveling powerhouse. Its quick throttle response and healthy low-end grunt is the perfect power profile to carve through trails or deal with traffic jams.

Matching the engine’s abilities every step of the way is the KLR650’s suspension. A 41mm fork with 7.9 inches of suspension travel up front, and a Uni-Trak® linkage system providing 7.3 inches of wheel travel in the rear combine to make the KLR650 a fun, functional commuter during the week and an adept backroad blaster on weekends.

Braking duties are handled by a dual-piston caliper gripping a 280mm petal-style disc in the front, and a 240mm petal-style disc squeezed by a single-piston caliper in the rear. This suspension and brake package boosts the KLR650’s on-road performance without diminishing its versatile off-road capabilities.

An expansive, saddlebag-friendly, rear luggage rack that can be fitted with a tail bag helps to make the KLR650 a worthy touring companion. A large, 5.8-gallon fuel tank and exemplary fuel economy mean the KLR650 can cover an amazing amount of ground between fill-ups.

That fuel range can translate into a long day in the saddle, so good wind protection is a must. This important job is handled by the frame-mounted bodywork, which includes a tall windscreen and large shrouds. Rider comfort is enhanced further by the seat design and plush urethane foam. A high-capacity 36-watt alternator pumps out enough juice for a high-output headlight and has the extra capacity to power the add-on electronic gadgets that no touring rider can live without.

The KLR650’s competent on-road performance continues once the pavement stops. A tough engine guard keeps loose rocks and gravel at bay, while its U.S. Forest Service-approved spark arrestor grants the KLR650 access to any terrain open to licensed vehicles. Add the optional Kawasaki tank, tail and saddlebags, and you have a recipe for long-distance exploration, beckoning KLR650 owners to enjoy on- and off-road adventures.

Authentic Kawasaki Accessories are available through Kawasaki dealers.

Nimble Explorer Does Double Duty as an Efficient Commuter

When adventure takes riders off the beaten path, the KLX250S is the right tool for the job. Built for both on-and off-road use, the light and nimble KLX250S is an ideal ride for dual-sporting fun. Its efficient single-cylinder engine is perfect for maneuvering through urban traffic or exploring the trails. No matter where the journey leads, it’s enhanced by the KLX’s long-travel suspension, impressive maneuverability and reliable liquid-cooled engine.

An easy-to-use push-to-start button starts up the KLX’s 249cc engine. That engine is mounted in a light, high-tensile steel perimeter frame, yielding a low center of gravity that translates into better maneuvering on tight trails. The 34mm semi-flat slide Keihin CVK carburetor provides great throttle response and broad, smooth power – not to mention fantastic fuel economy. The KLX250S meets California air pollution regulations, making it an ideal urban commuter in all 50 states.

A highly refined six-speed transmission contains the right gear for everything from off-road crawling to highway cruising, with an advanced shift cam for positive shift feel and firm engagement. The rigors of off-road motorcycling dictate additional protection for the exposed underside of the machine, so the KLX250S comes standard with an aluminum engine guard to protect its crankcase during off-road adventures. Negotiating tight terrain also highlights another off-road reality – heat. Dual lightweight, high-capacity Denso radiators and an electric fan provide ample cooling.

The KLX250S’s straight-line stability is enhanced by a rigid square-section main frame, yet its short wheelbase gives it outstanding turning aptitude. Complementing the chassis is a lightweight aluminum swingarm employing a highly rigid D-shaped cross section. KX™ racing-type chain adjusters allow for precise chain adjustments.

The KLX250S’s custom spring and damping settings, with slightly less wheel travel than a dedicated off-road machine, give a more planted feel in corners and make it easier for riders to reach the ground. The 43mm inverted cartridge-style front fork features 16-way adjustable compression damping and 10.0-inches of travel. The Uni-Trak® linkage-type rear suspension has 16-way adjustable compression and rebound damping, providing 9.1-inches of wheel travel. Strong, 4mm-thick spokes in the 21-inch front and 18-inch rear wheels provide excellent rigidity for enhanced off-road durability. The KLX250S also stops hard, thanks to twin-piston calipers squeezing a 250mm semi-floating petal-shaped disc up front and a 240mm petal-shaped disc at the rear.

Aggressively styled bodywork finishes off this powerful and rugged package, and a custom seat filled with firm urethane and a carefully chosen handlebar pull it all together for long, comfortable days on the road and off it.

Riders seeking enduro handling and modern engine performance in a dual-purpose motorcycle designed for effortless street riding will find it at their local Kawasaki dealership. The KLX250S offers serious capabilities in a fun, easy-to-ride package, regardless of where the adventure takes it.

Lightweight supermotard delivers quick reflexes and unlimited fun

For those seeking a nimble user-friendly bike with supermoto styling, Kawasaki has a solution in the shape of its new KLX™250SF. Based on the KLX250S dual sport, the new SF model is specifically tuned to deliver maximum on-road fun. Its 17-inch wheels, radial sportbike tires, a big front brake rotor and lowered suspension give it an air of purposeful aggression.

Sporting all of the updates and refinements found on the freshly minted KLX250S, the new KLX250SF has reduced wheel travel at both ends, placing the center of gravity lower to improve on-road handling and enhance straight-line stability. This also results in a more planted feel in corners and a lower seat height. The change in setup offers a firm ride quality, thanks to a change in front fork oil level and revised damping settings for both the fork and shock.

These changes provide a reduction in pitching motions during braking and acceleration and help allow the rider to hold a consistent line during aggressive on-road cornering. However, the suspension is still supple enough to soak up most road surface irregularities and offer a smooth ride. The KLX250SF’s fully-adjustable suspension features 16-way adjustable compression damping on the 43mm inverted cartridge-style front fork and 16-way adjustable compression and rebound damping on the Uni-Trak® rear suspension. Wheel travel is 9.1-inches front and 8.1-inches rear which strikes a happy-medium between long-travel off-road designs and short-travel sportbikes.

The KLX250SF’s short wheelbase aids its already outstanding ability to hold tight lines and its rigid box-section perimeter frame provides excellent transitional response, thanks to it’s rigid steering head. Complementing the chassis is a lightweight aluminum swingarm with a highly-rigid D-shaped cross section and KX™ racing-type chain adjusters for precise chain adjustment.

The new KLX250SF employs convenient electric-starting for its compact, liquid-cooled, four-stroke, single-cylinder engine. The 249cc engine is mounted in a lightweight, high-tensile steel perimeter frame to deliver a low center of gravity and superb maneuvering on tight roads. A gear-driven engine balancer keeps engine vibrations at bay for greater comfort and less fatigue on long rides.

A 34mm semi-flat slide Keihin CVK carburetor contributes to quick throttle response and precise power delivery. It also helps to provide increased fuel economy. An evaporative emissions system allows the KLX250SF to meet strict CARB regulations, making it eligible for sale in all 50 states.

A six-speed transmission provides optimum gearing for most occasions and helps the rider to keep the 249cc engine at its optimum rpm. It employs a smaller 39-tooth rear sprocket to extend its high-speed capabilities beyond those of the KLX250S dual sport.

Negotiating urban traffic or blasting around a tight race track highlights another strength of the KLX250SF – it keeps its cool. Incorporating dual lightweight, high-capacity Denso radiators and a shallow-footprint cooling fan provides an ample solution to potential heat issues.

New 17-inch cast aluminum wheels offer great handling, improved stability and the aggressive on-road performance sought by urban commandos and canyon carvers. The new wheels also allow access to a wide range of sportbike tire options. Aggressive riding on pavement demands powerful, fade-resistant stopping capabilities and the new KLX250SF delivers with a massive 300mm semi-floating petal disc up front clamped by a twin-piston caliper. The rotor is 4.0mm thick for increased rigidity, efficient heat dissipation, and optimum fade resistance. A single-piston caliper squeezing a 240mm rear petal disc compliments the big front brake.

Finishing off this package is a new set of aggressively styled ebony bodywork, a comfortable seat and a handlebar which offers good leverage so riders can flick the light KLX250SF side to side, or hold a tight cornering line with a minimum of effort.
Riders seeking supermoto handling and modern engine performance in a lightweight motorcycle designed for exciting street rides will find it at their local Kawasaki dealership. The KLX250SF offers serious capabilities in a fun, easy-to-ride package, regardless of where the adventure takes it.

Authentic Kawasaki Accessories are available through Kawasaki dealers.
